(The River Cooum originates in a village of the same name, about 70 km away from Chennai. Once a fresh water source is today a drainage course inside Chennai, collecting surpluses of 75 small tanks of a minor basin. The length of the river is about 65 km, of which 18 km fall within the Chennai city limits. Once a fishing river and boat racing ground, it has borne the brunt of the city’s unplanned explosion. The Kesavaram dam diverts the river into the Chembarambakkam Lake from which water is utilized for the supply of drinking water to the city of Chennai. Thereafter, the flow of water in the river is much reduced.)

The Cooum is mostly associated with its stench. No one who has ever visited Chennai could have missed the Cooum River. Polluted by industrial effluents and drainage from the hundreds of hutments along its banks, its strong odour pervades the city making its presence undeniable. It’s now actually become a part of Chennai life…Chennai without Cooum nah…

Cooum River was the pride of Madras with its clean watercourse, once upon a time According to Wikipedia “The name of Cooum appears to be derived from Tamil Literature. The word “coovalan” denotes a person who is well versed in the science of hydrology. ” It is likely, that the River Cooum might have derived its name from such a usage. According to one estimate 158 sewage canals are let into the Cooum. According to a report , Central Environmental Ministry under the National River Water Protection Scheme had sanctioned Rs 325.25 crore to Tamilnadu Government for cleaning them (where has the money gone?) Though a tidy sum appear to be allotted for cleaning the rivers at Chennai, there does not seem to be any visible activity towards beautifying the Cooum. Will Cooum becomes Chennai pride again? It’s gonna be a long process of wait and watch!

It’s known to be the city’s smelly eyesore, so it should hardly come as a surprise that the Cooum river is a killer water body with high toxic content. It is even estimated that, when flowing within city limits, has more toxins than even a sewer. A 72-km-long channel, the Cooum originates in the neighbouring Tiruvallur district and winds its way through Chennai before flowing into the Bay of Bengal. Tests undertaken to gauge the extent of pollution downstream showed fish could survive for only three to five hours in water near the mouth of the river in Chepauk even after the samples were diluted up to 50% (without aeration). The water has almost no dissolved oxygen, and instead there are traces of heavy metals like copper, besides sewage and sludge.

So why am I saying all this?
Well to the very simple fact that, ma old office was on the banks of Cooum. We loved the view of Cooum, cos it was a vast open space, with fresh air (now I cant really cocmment on how fresh), jusst thinking of it as fresh water way used to give us kicks. We had lot of arguments on the WHY ON EARTH WAS THE GOVT. ACTING IMMUNE TO THE COOUM? The stinking river of today once used to be a fresh water way, with boats on it? Where and when did the change happen? Aren’t there laws which prohibit the pollution of water bodies? Who actually looks into all this? I don’t know how long am gonna be in Chennai, but still I wish to see the Cooum river clean, the black mark in the heart of the city to go.

Prostitution–a way of life?

Is prostitution a WAY of LIFE?

As wiki explains–”A prostitute is a person, most of the time a woman,
who has sex with people for money. Prostitution is sometimes called
“worlds oldest profession”. There have been stories of it in almost
every culture and society.”

How can anyone call it a profession? When there is no ethics involved?
I know this statement can cause a huge argument! One does it for there
family and all that blah! But I don’t think I can ever relate to it!

Here both the sexes have to blamed! Leave alone the present
generation.. Which is just following the culture that has been
bestowed on them! One for being up for sale, the other for exploiting
other human being! It’s just so weird!

Many places around the world it’s considered to be a legal profession,
where the govt. actually collects taxes from them, and offer them
medical perks…but still is that money right enough to be part govt.
earnings? Many govt. have banned prostitution, or in other words it’s
illegal …so countries including India fall into that net! But is it
really been protected to call it an enforced LAW? Not really …every
now and then you see news articles …both print and tv.. that this
place had been raided..so many people were caught and all that blah!
The KINGPIN is missing blaaaaaah! So is the law really enforced?

Some places, like Muslim countries one can just sweetly get killed for
indulging in the so called “worlds oldest profession”. It’s a mixed
world, but skin trade somehow brought everyone together, because
that’s the amount money which is involved!

Leave alone the factor of news media… worlds best source of
entertainment for the people around the world, the INTERNET, more to
the point the “YouTube” is a site which is full of these scandal
videos’ which get hits in counts of millions..updated daily..leave
alone the multi trillion dollar pronographic business! Where is all
this really heading to? So much waste of online space and the energy
to maintain stuff that is actually just waste of huge amount of
money…and the valuable time! Am not saying I have not see any of
these …all am saying is I don’t see the point!

The main reason am siting down here to write this very post, is not
because am trying to act clean, or gonna clean up the whole world by
my own, NO!!

The reason am siting here and writing this is because, I never
imagined seen a hooker daily! I should not say “a”, but almost the
same set of nicely dressed, girls, who look so respectable, to be just
free trading on the busy streets of Chennai, Tamil Nadu. I spoke about
these to my friends, everyone knew about it! It’s all happening so
openly in front of ones eyes! And according to these talks even cops
are part of all this, otherwise when all people know about it, how
come the cops or any part of the govt. machinery NOT KNOW about all
this happening right there in front of you?

So this is indeed the best example of how messy the law system is!

Gemini one of the main section of the metro politically messy city of
Chennai, where I stay now..is one such open trade place! One huge
stretch from the Gemini bus stand to the Hotel Raj Bhavan, the darker
sides of Spurtank Road…. a hooker play ground! Why has no one
complained yet? Why is a city which is considered so much reserved
showing a closed eye to all this?

I don’t have an answer and am not trying to blame anyone! It’s a way
of life which sounds weird to me! I don’t wanna think of this more!

I didn’t take any pics! I didn’t want to highlight anyone!

fOssil…the heart has it’s reasons that reason cannot know!!!

Ha ha ha
I really don’t know why there are rules at all! There was huge cry
when the whole auto fare was revised after a long time! Ones
section(consumer) happy…and the other section of, auto drivers and
owners who are saying it not upto the mark! Not enough and all the
blah blah!

But then the rules came, enforced, all meters changed, upgraded and
all that stuff…I still don’t know if it was enforced …everyday I
get out of home or office bargaining with every auto guy…cos all
they know is rob you of all your money, giving a justification of
rising petrol prices…to which also he adds mirch masala!

From the moment the rules came in, I have never come across even a
single auto guy who has said sir METER CHARGE! No one even is ashamed
of saying the isane rates! But every guy happily turns on the meter,
cos they are afraid of the cops which stand at every corner!

Why is that never consumer related rules are enforced at full force!
Why is that we the consumers always suffer? Why is that some of the
other cities have the rule at least working slightly? How far can we
the consumers keep arguing?

Rules which are here just to broken, make me feel silly and just laugh!
